Although the area around Semans is primarily used for crop production, there is still cattle being raised in the area. Many of the local farmers run mixed farming operations.
Crops
Crops grown around the Semans area are wheat, barley, and oats as well as specialty crops such as canola, mustard, peas, and lentils.
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool
The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool serves farmers of Semans and area, providing them with the services of buying and grading grain. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool provides farmers with orders for fertilizer and chemicals, but the material must be picked up at the Pool Farm Service Centre in Raymore.
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool "A" was built in 1925, and the elevator in use today was built in 1967 on the east side of the old one. In 1980, this elevator was one of size locations selected for a pilot project introducing computers into Saskatchewan Wheat Pool's country elevator system. The computer provided a link to the Pool's head office in Regina. Saskatchewan Wheat Pool has been serving Semans and area for over 70 years.
SWP Terminal
Situated between Raymore and Semans at Booth Siding The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool has built an inland terminal to serve the farmers in the surrounding farming area. The elevator in Semans is now used for storage and stands as a reminder of an era that is drawing to a close.
The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool has built a state-of-the-art grain terminal 4.5 miles east of Semans at Booth Siding. The terminal, which cost 10 million dollars to build, has a one million bushel capacity. The main elevator itself has a 11,500 tonne (418,000 bushel) capacity, and the condominium storage will hold 16,000 tonne (582,000 bushel). Construction of the facility began in 1998, and started buying grain by July of 1999. First year purchases are projected to be in the range of five million bushels, topping out at approximately 9 million bushels by the third year. 60 to 80 jobs were expected to be created building the terminal, and 14 to 18 full-time jobs will be created to run the terminal once it is completed. The high through put terminal will be equipped with drying and cleaning capabilities and a 52 rail car spot. It is expected to close down the SWP elevators of Raymore, Booth Siding, Semans, Nokomis, Govan, Cymrick, Duval, and Strasbourgh. SWP has also opened discussions/negotiations with the Department of Highways to upgrade Highway 15 in time to carry the additional traffic that the new Booth Siding terminal will create.
